// Direct Answer
Trapezoidal thread gauges are GO/NO-GO inspection tools for Tr (trapezoidal) threads — the European standard power transmission thread defined by DIN 103 and ISO 2903. They use a 30° included thread angle, distinguishing them from ACME threads (29°) and metric fastening threads (60°). The most common tolerance class is 7H (internal) and 7e (external). Trapezoidal thread gauges are used for lead screws, ball screws, machine tool axes, valve stems, and linear actuators across European, Asian, and global industrial markets.

What Is a Trapezoidal Thread?

Trapezoidal threads (designated Tr) are a power transmission thread form defined by DIN 103 (Germany) and ISO 2903 (international). They are characterised by a 30° included angle — 15° on each flank — and a flat crest and root profile. This form provides high load-carrying capacity, good self-locking properties, and is easy to manufacture with standard tooling.

Trapezoidal threads are the European standard for lead screws and power transmission applications — equivalent in purpose to ACME threads in North America, but with a different angle and dimensional system. They are used throughout European machine tool manufacturing, as well as in Asian, Middle Eastern, and global industrial markets that follow European standards.

Trapezoidal vs ACME vs Metric Thread — Key Differences

Trapezoidal (Tr) and ACME threads are both power transmission threads, but they use different angles and dimensional systems and are not interchangeable. Metric threads are fastening threads — different purpose entirely. Using the wrong gauge type will produce incorrect inspection results.

Thread FormAngleStandardDesignationPrimary RegionInterchangeable?
Trapezoidal (Tr)30°DIN 103 / ISO 2903Tr 20×4Europe · Asia · GlobalNo
ACME29°ASME B1.51″-5 ACME-2GUSA · CanadaNo
Metric ISO (M)60°ISO 261 / DIN 13M12×1.75-6HGlobal (fastening)No

Tr and ACME are NOT interchangeable. The 1° difference in thread angle (30° vs 29°) means that Tr and ACME gauges will not produce correct inspection results when used on the other thread form. Always confirm whether your drawing specifies Tr (DIN 103 / ISO 2903) or ACME (ASME B1.5) before ordering gauges. For ACME gauges, see our ACME Thread Gauge Guide.

Trapezoidal Thread Designation — How to Read Tr Callouts

Trapezoidal thread callouts follow a specific format. Understanding the callout is essential for ordering the correct gauge.

Trapezoidal Thread Tolerance Classes

Trapezoidal threads use a tolerance class system similar to ISO metric threads — a number (tolerance grade) and a letter (tolerance position). Uppercase letters (H, G) indicate internal threads; lowercase letters (e, g, h) indicate external threads.

ClassThread LocationFit TypeTypical Application
7HInternal (nut/housing)Standard — most commonGeneral purpose lead screws, machine tool axes
8HInternal (nut/housing)LooseApplications requiring easy assembly or with coatings
9HInternal (nut/housing)Very looseLarge backlash acceptable — rough service
7eExternal (lead screw)Standard — most commonGeneral purpose lead screws — mates with 7H nut
7gExternal (lead screw)ClosePrecision lead screws, low backlash applications
8eExternal (lead screw)LooseCoated or plated lead screws

Default tolerance class: If the drawing shows no tolerance class for a Tr thread, 7H (internal) and 7e (external) are the correct defaults per DIN 103. This is the most widely used combination for general engineering lead screws and provides sufficient clearance for lubrication and thermal expansion in production machinery.

Trapezoidal Thread Gauge Types

🔌 Tr Thread Plug Gauge
Inspects: Internal Tr thread (nut, housing, feed nut)
Tolerance classes: 7H · 8H · 9H
GO member: Must thread through the full nut length
NO-GO member: Must not engage more than 2 turns
Standard: DIN 103 Part 7
Format: Double-ended (small sizes) or separate members
⭕ Tr Thread Ring Gauge
Inspects: External Tr thread (lead screw, shaft)
Tolerance classes: 7e · 7g · 8e
GO member: Must thread over the full screw length
NO-GO member: Must not engage more than 2 turns
Standard: DIN 103 Part 7
Format: Two separate rings (GO + NO-GO)

Trapezoidal Thread Gauge Inspection Procedure

The GO/NO-GO inspection procedure for Tr threads follows the same principles as standard metric thread inspection, with one additional consideration — the larger pitch and thread depth of Tr threads makes cleaning and lubrication more important than for fine pitch metric threads.

1
Clean thoroughly — Tr thread roots are deep Tr threads have larger pitch and deeper roots than equivalent metric fastening threads. Use compressed air and a brush to remove chips from thread roots before gauging. Chips trapped in the root will prevent the GO gauge from passing even on a correctly machined thread.
2
Apply instrument oil — always for Tr threads Unlike fine pitch metric threads where oil is optional, Tr threads should always be lightly oiled before gauging due to the larger contact area between gauge and workpiece thread flanks. Use light machine oil or instrument oil — not grease.
3
Apply GO gauge — hand pressure, full engagement For plug gauges: insert GO end into the Tr nut and rotate by hand through the full length. For ring gauges: place GO ring over the lead screw and rotate by hand over the full threaded length. Hand pressure only — no tools. GO must pass fully → GO test passed.
4
Apply NO-GO gauge — stops within 2 turns Apply NO-GO gauge by hand. Must not engage more than 2 full turns. If it enters more than 2 turns — thread is out of tolerance — reject the part. Record result with gauge serial number and calibration date.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Tr and ACME thread gauges?
Trapezoidal (Tr) and ACME are both power transmission threads but use different angles — Tr uses 30° and ACME uses 29°. They are defined by different standards (DIN 103 / ISO 2903 for Tr; ASME B1.5 for ACME) and use different dimensional systems. The gauges are not interchangeable. Tr threads are the standard in Europe and most of Asia; ACME threads are the standard in the USA and Canada. Always confirm which standard your drawing specifies before ordering gauges.
What tolerance class should I order for a general-purpose lead screw?
For a standard general-purpose lead screw — lathe carriage, milling table, or similar — 7H (internal, for the nut or feed nut) and 7e (external, for the lead screw itself) are the correct default tolerance classes per DIN 103. This combination provides sufficient clearance for lubrication and thermal expansion in production machinery. For tighter backlash requirements, use 7g for the external thread. If the drawing does not specify a tolerance class, 7H / 7e is the correct assumption.
Can one Tr gauge be used for multiple pitches of the same diameter?
No. Each Tr gauge is specific to one diameter and one pitch. A Tr 20×4 gauge cannot be used to inspect a Tr 20×2 thread — the pitch diameters, thread depths, and gauge limits are all different. Many Tr diameters are available in multiple pitches per DIN 103, so always confirm both the diameter and the pitch from the engineering drawing before ordering gauges.
Are Tr thread gauges available with ISO/IEC 17025 calibration certificates?
Yes. All GageTools Tr thread gauges — plug and ring — can include, on request, an ISO/IEC 17025 calibration certificate showing actual measured values for pitch diameter, major diameter, minor diameter, pitch, and thread angle. The certificate is NIST-traceable and accepted by ISO 9001, IATF 16949, and European quality system auditors.
What is the lead time for Tr thread gauges?
Standard Tr thread gauges in common sizes (Tr 12–Tr 60 in standard pitches) ship within 5 to 7 working days. Less common sizes and large diameters (Tr 70+) typically require 7 to 14 working days. Custom or non-standard Tr gauges require 10 to 20 working days after drawing approval. All gauges can include, on request, the calibration certificate. Contact GageTools with your specific callout for an exact lead time confirmation.
