What Is a Metric Thread?

Metric threads are defined by ISO 261 and manufactured to DIN 13. They use a 60° included angle and are designated by the letter M followed by the nominal diameter in millimetres and, where required, the pitch in millimetres.

Coarse Series (standard)
Designated as M12 or M12×1.75. The coarse pitch is the default series and is used in most general engineering applications. Only the diameter is required in the callout.
Fine Series (always state pitch)
Designated as M12×1.25 or M12×1.0. Fine threads must always include the pitch in the callout. Used for vibration resistance, thin-wall parts, and precision adjustments.
Thread designation rule: M12 = coarse series (pitch implied). M12×1.25 = fine series (pitch must be stated). Always confirm pitch before ordering gauges or taps.

Metric Thread Tolerance Classes

Tolerance Class Application Typical Use Gauge Grade
4HInternal thread (tight)Precision assemblies, aerospaceGrade Y/Z
6HInternal thread (standard)General engineering — most commonGrade X/Y
7HInternal thread (loose)Coated parts, easy assemblyGrade X
6gExternal thread (standard)Bolts, studs — most commonGrade X/Y
6eExternal thread (loose)Plated or coated external threadsGrade X

How to Select the Right Metric Thread Gauge

Select the gauge based on the thread type and tolerance class shown on your engineering drawing. For most metric threads, a standard GO/NO-GO gauge set in tolerance class 6H covers internal threads; a 6g set covers external threads.

  • →Internal thread (nut/hole): Use thread plug gauge GO/NO-GO
  • →External thread (bolt/shaft): Use thread ring gauge GO/NO-GO
  • →Standard tolerance: Order 6H (internal) or 6g (external)
  • →Calibration cert needed: Specify ISO/IEC 17025 in RFQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between M12 and M12×1.25?
M12 refers to the coarse series with a 1.75mm pitch (the pitch is implied and does not need to be stated). M12×1.25 is a fine series thread where the pitch must always be stated. They require different gauges, taps, and tap drill sizes.
What tap drill size should I use for M10×1.5?
For M10×1.5 coarse, use an 8.5mm tap drill for 75% thread engagement (standard for most materials). For soft or brittle materials, use 8.9mm for 50% engagement. The formula is: Tap drill = Major diameter − Pitch = 10 − 1.5 = 8.5mm.
Which tolerance class should I order for general engineering?
6H is the standard tolerance class for internal metric threads in most general engineering applications. 6g is standard for external threads. If your drawing does not specify a tolerance class, 6H/6g is the correct default.
Can metric thread gauges be supplied with a calibration certificate?
Yes. All GageTools metric thread gauges can be supplied, on request, with an ISO/IEC 17025 calibration certificate showing actual measured values for pitch diameter, major diameter, minor diameter, pitch, and thread angle — compared against nominal values with deviations recorded.
